ATG Track Academy
On the Track at Chichester University
Welcome to the Junior ATG Club
Based at the athletics track at the University of Chichester, Junior ATG Club provides a fun, engaging, and inspiring introduction to athletics for children aged 5–12. Set within one of the region’s premier sporting environments, our programme is designed to help young athletes develop fundamental movement skills, build confidence, and discover a lifelong enjoyment of sport and physical activity.
As an important part of the athlete development pathway into Chichester Runners Club, Junior ATG Club focuses on teaching the core disciplines of athletics – running, jumping, and throwing – while nurturing the physical, social, and emotional skills that help children succeed both on and off the track.
Our philosophy is simple: every child deserves the opportunity to experience high-quality coaching in a positive, inclusive environment where effort, enjoyment, and personal progress are celebrated.
Developing Athletic Foundations for Life
Athletics provides the building blocks for virtually every sport. Through carefully planned sessions, children develop the movement skills that form the foundation of physical literacy and long-term athletic development.
Each session incorporates a variety of activities designed to improve:
- Running technique and speed
- Agility, balance, and coordination
- Jumping and landing mechanics
- Throwing skills and power development
- Mobility and flexibility
- Endurance and stamina
- Reaction speed and athletic awareness
- Teamwork and communication
- Confidence and resilience
By developing these essential skills at an early age, children gain physical competencies that support participation across a wide range of sports and activities throughout their lives.
Outstanding Coaching
At Junior ATG Club, we believe that great coaching can make a lasting impact on a young person’s sporting journey. That’s why our athletes are supported by experienced, enthusiastic, and fully qualified coaches who understand how children learn, develop, and thrive.
The programme is led by Sam Bass-Cooper, a former international pole vaulter and highly respected youth athletics coach. Sam holds a Master’s degree in Youth Athletic Development and is a qualified Level 2 UK Athletics Coach with extensive experience working with young athletes.
Drawing upon both academic expertise and practical experience, Sam delivers sessions that are challenging, engaging, and age-appropriate. Every activity is designed to help children develop sound movement patterns while encouraging curiosity, creativity, and enjoyment.
Our coaching team is committed to creating a supportive atmosphere where every child feels valued, encouraged, and motivated to achieve their personal best.
More Than Just Athletics
While athletic development is at the heart of our programme, the benefits extend far beyond sport.
Children attending Junior ATG Club learn valuable life skills including:
- Self-confidence and self-belief
- Goal setting and perseverance
- Respect for others
- Teamwork and cooperation
- Leadership and responsibility
- Positive attitudes towards physical activity
We understand that every child develops at their own pace. Our inclusive approach ensures that all participants, regardless of ability or experience, feel welcomed and supported throughout their journey.
Whether a child dreams of becoming a competitive athlete or simply wants to have fun, make friends, and stay active, they will find a place where they belong.
A Fun, Friendly and Inclusive Community
Above all else, Junior ATG Club is about enjoyment.
Our sessions are energetic, varied, and packed with games, challenges, and activities that keep children engaged while they learn. We foster a positive club culture where friendships are formed, achievements are celebrated, and every participant is encouraged to take pride in their progress.
Parents can be confident that their children are learning in a safe, welcoming environment where wellbeing and enjoyment are just as important as performance.
